Bachelard's Steps
To express a thought, an outdoor
staircase waiting to be climbed to the roof is diametrically different from the
one buried in a dungeon with little to no daylight. Yet, these two imageries could form a duality
like two sides of the same coin.
From the inspired reading of The Poetics of Space by Gaston
Bachelard, in which building parts are carefully examined psychologically and
revered intimately. In this work, I use
‘steps’ as the subject and apply it in his manner of investigations.
The work is an attempt to explore on the
senses when a person is confronted with an archetype inherently imbued with antagonistic
values.

This is a maquette of a new sculpture - study of columns. I have no name for it yet. Make suggestion if you have one.

Paper collage, acrylics on cement and resin
This paper collage and painted sculpture is a tribute to the Teatro del Mondo by Aldo Rossi (1931-97). Dramas and other performances were held in this floating theatre amid journeys throughout the Venice Biennale, 1979-80. The architect used the discourse of travelling and stage to signify life journeys for his passengers. This sculpture examines the duality of realism and fantasy through the toy-like theatre, much like the great tradition of modern Italian cinema.
Other than Venice, showboats could be located from the major rivers of the US to the waterways of Southeast Asia in the past.
